 Choosing Where to Live

Four things to weigh before you choose

Budget beyond the price

Leave room for closing costs. British Columbia adds a property transfer tax at closing; Alberta has none, just land title and mortgage registration fees.

Commute and access

Drive the route at rush hour before you commit. Transit, ring roads and highway access shape daily life more than an extra bedroom.

Schools and family

Confirm catchment areas with the school board. Boundaries change, and listing descriptions can be out of date.

Lifestyle and amenities

Walk the area on a weekday evening and a Saturday morning — parks, pathways and shops can feel like two different neighbourhoods.
